Abstract Sololuminescence can readily be seen when aerated is insonated with continuous wave therapeutic ultrasound at room temperature but is not easily observed when short pulses of diagnostic ultrasound are used. In this work on ultrasound generator, operating in the region of 1 MHz and capable of producing pulses of different length and repetition rate, was used for insonation. The pulse repetition rate of the ultrasound was fixed at 1 kHz since this is characteristic of diagnostic machines, and a series of thresholds for sonoluminescence was obtained for two transducers, one therapeutic and one diagnostic, as the number of cycles in each pulse was varied. Sonoluminescence was observed for pulses of a few cycles, but the ultrasound intensity threshold for onset increased sharply with decreasing pulse length. Under all conditions tested, sonoluminescence was more readily sustained than initiated. At about 20 cycles per pulse, peak negative pressures of about 400 kPa initiated sonoluminescence. These conditions are well within the range of some regimens for Doppler ultrasound and not far removed from the diagnostic situation.

Abstract The diffusion of rhodanate ions into the extracellular space of the sartorius and gastrocnemius muscles ion frogs has been investigated. The diffusion coefficient in control muscle was 3.6*10^(-4) cm^(2)/min. Treatment with ultrasound led to increased diffusion rate both into and out of the extracellular space. The diffusion coefficient under these conditions has been found to be 4 times as high as in control muscles. Under the effect of ultrasonic irradiation, more rhodante ions accumulated in the muscle than necessary to saturate the extracellular space. This was due to the entrance of rhodanate ions into the muscle fibres. Ultrasonic treatment influenced not only diffusion, but also penetration processes.

Abstract The application of ultrasound in examinations in the area of contemporary obstetrics and gynecology, in particular for fetal diagnosis is indispensable. It is impossible to return to the use of the Traube method in place of the Doppler method. To diagnose growth and abnormal localization of the fetus and placenta, examination by the pulse method is repeated several times in a pregnant woman. To include the observation of movement, the recently developed electric scanner may be used more frequently in the future. Therefore, it is a matter of urgency that we establish the safety of the ultrasound diagnostic system in clinical application with respect to fetus survival. At least a maximum allowable level should be tentatively selected from the standpoint of regulation of the total dose. For this purpose, part of our studies is discussed in this report.

Abstract 1) Low power electronic scan real-time B-mode equipment was developed with the intensity of ultrasound of SATP 0.01 W/cm2 after the study of minimum power level necessary for the detection of intrauterine fetal heart beat. 2) Electronic scan M-mode equipment and a CRT with optical fibers were utilized in the continuous recording of fetal heart movement during pregnancy.

Abstract The effect of continuous-wave ultrasound on the chromosomes of newborn infants has been investigated. Twenty-four women were studied during labour. The fetal heart was monitored by a Sonicaid FM2 monitor applied to the abdomen, and continuous monitoring undertaken for intervals varying from 1 hour 5 minutes to 9 hours 25 minutes. There was no increase in the number of chromosome aberrations in cultures of blood taken from the insonated babies when compared with controls.
